About Me

"Family dysfunction rolls down from generation to generation, like a fire in the woods, taking down everything in its path until one person in one generation has the courage to turn and face the flames. That person brings peace to their ancestors and spares the children that follow."
- Terry Real

I was raised in Charlotte, NC and obtained my BA from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1988. Thereafter, I worked in Washington, DC and studied abroad before returning to Chapel Hill to complete both my Master in Social Work (MSW) and my Juris Doctor (JD) in May of 1994. Summers and placements centered on advocacy for death row inmates and hands-on work with families and children in crisis.

Thereafter, from my years of legal work came a clear understanding: I most enjoyed working one-on-one to help others help themselves. And so, after nearly a decade of psychotherapy trainings and years of individual work on myself, I pivoted to full-time psychotherapy.

Currently I work with adolescents (ages 12 and up), adults and couples on issues related to trauma, addiction, anxiety, depression and personal growth. I also maintain an active Parent Coordinator caseload, laboring to tamp down conflict among divorcing parents. I remain licensed as an attorney but no longer actively practice.

I’m married to Ellen Pizer and we have three amazing young kids (ages 12, 10 & 6).
